Putting Together an Elk Hunting Trip
Planning your elk hunting trips
can become difficult after a few seasons as you try more and more
elk hunting ranches but aren’t quite finding one that you
want to go back to each year. For new hunters, part of the problem lies in knowing
what makes a good ranch and the perfect elk hunting trip. For seasoned
vets, the issue may be ‘finding’ a good ranch. A good ranch has more
to offer than just an influx of stock and a nice scotch at the end of the day, good
ranches are places where you can refine your skill and enjoy your vacation while
coming home with a trophy to hang.
How big should the elk hunting ranch be?
The first mistake many hunters make in looking for a quality experience is to choose
a ranch based on size. A thousand acres of land won’t produce good hunting
if the land doesn’t support the animals’ natural surroundings and isn’t
challenging to the hunter. Stone Creek Hunting Ranch has over 470 acres of some
of the most beautiful and challenging hunting grounds in Missouri. There is a mix
of glade, hill and climbing terrain that will give you experience in hunting from
a stand or stalking. You can even arrange for guided elk hunting
from 4x4s. The mix of terrain allows for a variety of wild feed to support the animals
so they are well fed, wild, and adapted to their environment. All of this makes
them better at being a challenge to hunt, which is what you want. A prairie based
ranch can’t support and camouflage a herd, reducing their natural habitat
to make it easier for you to shoot, but there is a world of difference between a
week spent shooting and a week spent hunting.
The “Right Stuff”
Elk hunting outfitters know that
there is more involved to the right kit than just the weapon and supplies.
A large part of the elk hunting experience lies in the discovery
of the bull and in the mastery of self in choosing not to get distracted by the
whitetail or red deer that crosses your path. A good guide will help remind you
that one shot will put the elk you seek on alert. The purpose of each hunt is for
a particular trophy, unless you are hunting open. Better to practice self-discipline
to get what you want, the way you do to succeed in every other aspect of your life,
than be encouraged to throw it all out the window for a cheap thrill that disappoints.
